cairn — Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 24, 2026
Cairn is a mobile app for reading curated AI news and exploring an archive of AI history. This policy describes what data the app collects, why, and how to remove it. The short version: you can browse without an account; an account exists only to sync your reading history; we don't sell data or show ads.
Data we collect
| Data | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Email address and authentication identifier | If you sign in (email code, Google, or Apple) | Account identity and sign-in |
| Tester email address and requested platform | If you request early access on this website | Managing and sending your TestFlight or Google Play tester invitation |
| Display name and chosen avatar | If you set them in your profile | Personalising your profile |
| Reading activity (articles and nodes read or saved, tour progress, followed topics) | If you are signed in | Syncing your archive across sessions and devices |
| Push notification token and notification preferences | If you enable the daily digest | Delivering the digest you asked for |
| Feedback you submit (message, category, app version, platform) | If you use Send Feedback | Improving the app |
| Usage analytics (screens viewed, features used, content-item interactions, and a random install identifier) | Only if you enable anonymous analytics in Settings | Understanding which features matter |
| Crash reports (stack trace, device model, app version, and OS — not your account id or email) | If the app crashes and crash reporting is enabled in the release | Finding and fixing bugs |
Without an account, reading activity stays on your device. If you opt in to analytics, Cairn uses a random install identifier that is never replaced with your account id.
Services we rely on
- Supabase — database, authentication, and hosting for account data.
- Google — only if you choose "Continue with Google" to sign in.
- Apple — only if you choose "Continue with Apple" to sign in.
- PostHog — product analytics.
- Sentry — crash reporting.
- Expo — push notification delivery.
- YouTube — video playback when you choose to open an embedded YouTube video.
Each processes data only to provide the function described. We do not sell personal data, share it with advertisers, or use it for purposes beyond running Cairn.
Retention & deletion
Account data is kept while your account exists. Deleting your account — in the app via Profile → Delete account, or per the steps on the account deletion page — permanently removes your account, email, profile, reading history, saved items, preferences, and push tokens, and signs out all devices. Tester requests are kept while the relevant test is active or until you ask us to remove yours. Feedback you submitted is kept in anonymised form (with your email removed). Analytics use only a random install identifier; deleting the account resets that identifier on the device. Crash reports are not tagged with a Cairn account id. PostHog and Sentry retain already-received anonymous records according to their configured retention periods.
Your rights
You can access, correct, export, or delete your data. Profile details are editable in the app; for anything else, email us and we'll respond within 30 days.
Children
Cairn is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, we'll update this page and note it in the app.
